The last time Otto Acosta stood up at the top of the podium was back at Silverstone in 2017. Fast-forward two years and the veteran has done it again in no other place than Ferrari's home race in front of the tifosi.
To the surprise of the Italian crowd, Acosta set the fastest lap in Q1 being the only driver in the 1:19s. His dominance on this track was made clear when he stormed to the Pole Position with an impressive lap nearly half a second quicker than second-place Ezequiel Montero. It looked for once that the Ferraris were vulnerable after Georgiev managed a 3rd place starting position and Mackey 9th.
The race wasn't any different than qualifying, Acosta simply pulled away from the rest of the field and finished 21 seconds in front of Georgiev. Mackey was able to climb back up and finish in 3rd which secured another double-podium finish for Ferrari, not in the order they wanted it but still a great result nonetheless.
It seems like the Williams team have found a massive performance gain with their new aero package that was introduced in Hungary. Will Acosta keep on his current form for long? Will Haynie follow him and continue taking points away from their nearest rivals Mercedes? Stay tuned for all the answers when we meet again in two weeks in Singapore for the longest race in the calendar from the Marina Bay Circuit.
